Safari in the Gobi Desert & Jalman Meadows, Mongolia

Ikh Nartiin Chuluumeans “rocks with a lot of sun” in Mongolian. This is a nature reserve with the most adventurous rock formations, and with a unique wildlife. Among other things, many hundreds of Argali sheep live here, the largest population of wild sheep in the world. If we are lucky, we will also spot the shy Mongolian gazelle, some of the world’s largest prey and various bucks. Camp Jalman Meadows is located in the Khan Khentii Wilderness, an area three times the size of Yellowstone National Park. Within surprisingly short distances of the camp, many magnificent experiences await up close.

To Ikh Nart

You will be picked up from your hotel in Ulan Bator at 08:30 to drive to the city’s main train station. The trip starts an hour later and then the adventure begins. The trip goes in a southeasterly direction over the large meadows and steppes, which dominate the landscape here. Nature is slowly becoming more and more dry and harsh, and at Tsomoog you get off the train, to be picked up by car and driven the last stretch to Ikh Nart.

For the next two days you will explore Ikh Nart both on foot and by jeep. In the area you have different projects where you study different species of birds and animals such as the Argali sheep. Results and observations are available in the camp, and your guides also have plenty to tell. From time to time along the way, you will meet nomads who are looking for good fields for their cattle, goats or sheep.

To Jalman Meadows

Now an exciting day awaits: from Ulan Bator come a pair of small planes (Cessna machines), which land on the small runway close to the camp to pick you up. The journey then subsequently goes north, rain with approx. an hour in the air. The destination of the flight is the southern parts of the Jalman Meadows forests and the Tuul River. Welcome to the land of horses and yaks! After you have landed, you can either walk or cycle the approximately 6 kilometers to the camp. Your luggage will be transported.

To Khan Khentii

Now two adventurous days await. Here is the opportunity to hike, explore the area from the horseback and you can also take an exciting trip on the river. You decide the pace and content. The mountains in this area (Hentii) have beautiful forests with birch and various larch trees. Since 1993, this part of Mongolia has been under nature protection, and the Hentii wilderness stretches all the way up to the Russian border. The people who live here live basically the same way they did 500 years ago. Maybe you spot wolves, wild boars, moose, red deer, marmots and Mongolian gazelles.
