The Svalbard Islands lie halfway between Norway and the North Pole, at 74 to 81 degrees north. During this journey you will experience an adventure embraced by the arctic wilderness. It is almost like traveling back in time when the first adventure travelers such as Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld explored this magnificent place. Here you feel the rush of adrenaline as you drive your dog sled on wheels through the terrain, marvel at the wildlife as you glide quietly through the water aboard a boat on the Arctic Ocean. You will also hike on the Nordenskiöld glacier, together with an expert guide. It will all feel a little bit surreal. And it is. Welcome to Svalbard!

Itinerary

Day 1. : Summer dogsledding team 6_Photo by Silje Forbes_Basecamp Explorer

Welcome to Svalbard and Longyearbyen!
From the airport, you can take public transport or book privately with Ecolyx before you go. After you have checked in, the reception will be happy to recommend a restaurant where you can have lunch before the evening’s activity. A little later in the afternoon you will be picked up for an exciting dog sledding experience in the Arctic summer landscape. At Trapper’s Station, seventy alaskan huskies are waiting to take you on a journey. Two and two share a wagon with a team of 6 dogs. You help harness the dogs before you follow the guide team out into Adventdalen. You can expect to see an abundance of arctic fauna, birds and reindeer in their natural habitat. Once back in the kennel, the dogs can be taken back to their houses and we thank them for a pleasant experience, before the journey back to Longyearbyen and overnight at the Basecamp Hotel.

Day 2.: basecamp-explorer-nordenskiold

Are you ready to start your Svalbard adventure?
Your guide meets you at the hotel’s reception at 08.00 and takes you down to the harbor where the transport out to the Isfjord awaits. With the Isfjord Express, the trip goes out into the Isfjorden and past bird cliffs and amazing formations to the Billefjorden. The fjord is full of birds, walruses, seals and beluga whales in the summer, so keep your eyes open for arctic wildlife. In the heart of Billefjord we find the mighty Nordenskiöld glacier in Adolfbukta. Here, hidden at the foot of the glacier, lies Nordenskiöld Lodge. Once at the lodge, we are met by the host who shows us the way and invites us to an expedition lunch with a spectacular view of the glacier.

In the afternoon we explore the moraine and the landscape on foot, and get to know the area better. There will also be time to relax in the sauna before dinner is served. Dinner and overnight in double room at Nordenskiöld Lodge

Day 3.: basecamp-explorer-glacier-hiking-2

After breakfast, it’s time to explore the mighty Nordenskiöld glacier up close. We go through our equipment and safety on the glacier. The glacier is in constant motion, and has during the last the years moved back further up the mountain. As we hike towards the glacier, we can see clear tracks following the movements of the ice.
We spend the day learning to walk with crampons and an ice axe, climbing up and down. Although the feeling of exploring large parts of the glacier is there, we only experience a small part of Spitsbergen’s large glacier system. We enjoy lunch on the glacier, with a fantastic view of the Billefjord. Hiking on blue ice is a fascinating experience!
In the afternoon we return to the warm sauna and the cabin and let the impressions of the day sink in.

Dinner and overnight in double room at Nordenskiöld Lodge

Day 4. : basecamp-explorer-whalerus-scaled

Last breakfast at the cabin and last opportunity to see more of the surroundings for now. Isfjord Express picks us up and takes us on a sea safari where we have good opportunities to see wild animals in the ocean.

Before the journey continues to the next base camp, Isfjord Radio Adventure Hotel, we enjoy a good lunch in Longyearbyen. We then make our way back down to the quay and board the Isfjord-Ekspressen. Now we drive west, out of Isfjorden. During the journey we pass a bird rock and old settlements. As always, you must to keep your eyes open for wildlife when you are out on the fjord here up in the north. Maybe the mighty blue whale will show up…

At Isfjord Radio you will be welcomed by the host who will take you on a station tour, where you will learn more about Isfjord Radio’s fascinating history. After check-in, you can enjoy a moment in the sauna before the kitchen invites you to an Arctic-inspired menu. Dinner and overnight stay in double room at Isfjord Radio

Day 5. : basecamp-explorer-spitsbergen-isfjord-radio-adventure-hotel-svalbard-isfjordflya-hike-11-scaled

After breakfast in the cabin, the guide wants to take you on one of his favorite walks in the landscape around Isfjord Radio. Kapp Linne offers the history of the earth with its clear geological signs, as well as our own more recent history of trappers, fishermen and exploration of the Arctic. The trip is approximately 10-16 km long based on today’s route.
You walk towards Linnevannet, where the chef catches sable trout for
today’s menu. The canoes are waiting here. Or you can walk along the coast of Kapp Linne, along the mighty Griegbergen. Here you will find traces of whalers and local trappers. At Båtudden, we have had a visit from a walrus colony in recent years. Lunch is enjoyed outdoors, while Svalbard reindeer graze nearby. Back at the station, you can relax with a book from Professor Åkerman’s library, which tells its wonderful story from Kapp Linne. The kitchen invites you to dinner, which can be accompanied with a nice glass of wine all while the arctic fox hunts for its meal just outside the windows. Dinner and overnight stay in double room at Isfjord Radio

Day 6. : basecamp-explorer-boat-safari-2

For the brave ones, we challenge you to a morning dip in the ocean – accompanied with a polar bear guard! After breakfast, it’s time for a boat safari. In an open rib boat, the trip goes east along the coast before we cross the Isfjorden at Kapp Starostin and set course for the mighty Alkehornet, where every summer there are thousands of nesting arctic birds.

In Trygghamna we will disembark and eat expedition lunch on the beach. After lunch, we continue the journey towards the magnificent Esmarkbré in Ymerbukta. If we are lucky, we can see whales, seals and the arctic king – the polar bear! Back at the station, the coffee can be enjoyed by the sun kissed house wall before the journey goes back towards civilization and the “big city” Longyearbyen. Dinner and overnight stay in double room at Isfjord Radio

Day 7. : Basecamp-Explorer-Isfjord-Radio-exterior-2

Breakfast is served in the Travelers Club before the last day in the Arctic. Use the day to see what this small town high in the north has to offer. Have a cup of coffee in a cafe, watch people, find a few last souvenirs. It’s time to just enjoy yourself before it’s time to leave for the airport.

Good to know about Svalbard:  Despite Svalbard’s northern location, the archipelago has a relatively mild climate compared to other areas of the same latitude. In summer, the temperature is around 5°C and normally very little rain, although fog and low clouds are quite common. Although it rarely rains, the ground is often wet due to the melting snow. Cold winds are common even in summer. It must be remembered that the weather on Svalbard can change quickly and local variations can vary greatly.

During the winter, the average temperature is from -14°C. It is not unusual for temperatures between -20 and -30 degrees celsius. In combination with wind, temperatures can become extremely low.

Longyearbyen has midnight sun from April 19th to August 23rd. During this bright period, the sun never goes below the horizon. In contrast, from late October to mid-February the sun never appears above the horizon. The dark polar nights last from the middle of November to the end of January and during this period you cannot distinguish day from night.

Visa: European and US citizens do not need a visa to Norway.

Time zone:  GMT +1

Vaccinations:  No vaccinations required.

Packing:  With the right packing, enough food and good daily routines, you can stay warm even on cold days. This is of course important for you to enjoy your arctic adventure. We recommend everyone to wear wool and layer upon layer, wool socks both during summer and winter season. The wind in Svalbard can be strong and if it blows over the glacier it can also be very cold.

Packing list:  We recommend you bring the following equipment: A solid backpack, bag for personal belongings, warm windproof jacket and trousers, warm down jacket / parka, warm windproof hat, 2 pairs of woolen gloves, 1 pair of windproof mittens, 1 pair of work gloves (when handling dogs, etc.), 2 sets of woolen underwear and sweater, warm woolen or fleece jacket, woolen or fleece trousers, 2-3 pairs of woolen socks, toiletries, sunglasses, binoculars and camera. Due to limited space in the sleds, we advise you to bring a minimum of luggage (remaining luggage can be stored at the Basecamp Trappers Hotel). Included: All guests will be equipped with thermal suit, snow boots, windproof gloves, face mask, goggles and hat. In addition, we will provide a warm sleeping bag, sleeping mat, tent and necessary camping equipment. Our experienced guide will take care of the guests’ safety and bring all the necessary safety equipment.

Local currency: Norwegian kroner

Weather:  Weather Svalbard

Phone and email: The mobile network works great in Norway. Basecamp management wishes that you use mobiles discreetly or turn it off.

Safety:  Safety instructions are given on site when you arrive and it is VERY important to follow them. Encountering a polar bear is an amazing experience but can also be extremely dangerous. All guides are armed 24/7 to ensure your safety.

At Basecamp Spitsbergen, people are particularly concerned about the global warming of the earth considering that it is particularly visible right at our poles. The biggest project to counter this is by planting trees in Kenya. All guests are invited to participate in the project. By planting trees we can reduce CO2 emissions, we use as few resources as possible at our destinations in Svalbard and we use organic products to keep your footprint as small as possible.

At Basecamp Spitsbergen, SEK 250 per guest is invested in the tree project in Kenya, which is enough to plant 8 trees.
