Your beautiful accommodation is situated on the bank of the internationally renowned Alta River in Norway’s high Arctic.
The Lodge offer guests premium accommodation combined with large lounge, restaurant and bar area. All of the rooms have panoramic windows extending from the floor into the ceiling, maximizing the views of the adjacent river and Arctic wilderness as well as enabling viewing of Northern lights and endless summer nights from the comfort of your room.
After breakfast you will go on a “must do” Arctic Wilderness Experience to the Alta fjord where we will fish for what some consider to be a prized delicacy. The experienced guide will let you in on local fishing secrets and tell you stories revolving around the King Crab and history of the area. The food is half the journey. After your trip on the Fjord, you will make your way back to Sorrisniva for a world class, as fresh as can be, meal. The King Crab is loaded with what can be described as a sweetness and meatiness unlike any other crab meat in the world. The romanticism of working hard to harvest the wild crab in combination with a renowned culinary experience makes this experience one that shouldn’t be missed.
Horse riding offers the opportunity to enjoy being on horseback whilst passing through the local wilderness during the endless Summer or through the Autumn colours.You will begin by entering the pasture to select a horse, before bringing them back to the farm to start grooming them. When you’re all set, you will venture out into the wilderness. You’ll be in control of the pace, and the ride will be adjusted to your level of experience. The horses are as safe as can be, and you will be provide with helmets for added peace of mind. This experience is perfect for beginners.
After the ride, we’ll relax with a cup of coffee and some light refreshments on the farm porch, rounding off a truly unforgettable Arctic horse riding taster.
Traveling against the current of the Alta River and powering through exciting rapids, this journey takes you to the farthest possible point in the river by riverboat. The trip up the river starts in a green, lush forest landscape of pine, birch, and aspen, with low hills, houses, and farms on the riverbank. Along the way, you might even catch a glimpse of golden eagles hovering over the treetops. It follows the river as it winds through the wilderness and passes over several rapids. Whilst the rapid passages are exciting your river boatmen ensure your safety. The safari passes through the Alta Canyon which is the largest river canyon in Northern Europe. Dress in warm clothes as the river water is cold creating cool breezes. Upon your return to Sorrisniva you will be offered refreshments including coffee and tea.
Enjoy a guided hike to the Gapahuk in the middle of the Nordic forest that surrounds Sorrisniva. On this trip you will hear the Alta River flowing in the background, and have stunning views of the valley that Sorrisniva calls home.
This is a hike that takes you over a beautiful section of Finnmarksvidda, with the view of Northern Europe’s Largest Canyon and the famous salmon fishing river – Alta River. Within a wide open landscape you are bound to find wild blueberries and lingonberries, and if you’re lucky you might even find a patch often referred to as “Finnmark’s gold”, or more commonly known as the cloudberry.
Sorrisniva is renowned for its culinary experience which is based upon locally sourced produce. The chefs create unique dishes using the best ingredients from Arctic Norway including reindeer and moose from the tundra, seafood from the Alta River and Norwegian sea, vegetables from local farms and berries picked in the local wilderness.
The Maku Restaurant offers a fantastic culinary experience whilst overlooking the Alta River and surrounding wilderness. The fine dining menu in the restaurant provides a culinary adventure that your tastebuds will never forget. The menu at Maku changes with the Arctic seasons and brings the finest ingredients gathered from nature’s larder into the Arctic Wilderness Lodge
The iconic Lavvu restaurant, which represents the Sami tent design, has a special ambiance creating a memorable dining experience. In 2021 the Lodge cooperated with the Norwegian National Cooking Team and assembled a new savory culinary experience for the Lavvu Restaurant which closely relates to the very unique Arctic seasons that they have in the north.

– Sorrisniva prioritise locally sourced food produce for their restaurants.
– Electricity consumed is 100% from renewable energy, either hydro or wind. The new Arctic Wilderness Lodge has been designed and constructed to be energy efficient with high efficiency insulation and smart heating technology to optimise electrical consumption for heating as well as lighting.
– Sorrisniva is committed to being carbon neutral by 2030.
– The Igloo Hotel is a great example of sustainability. We build the igloo hotel each year out of natural ice and with snow created using renewable energy. The only carbon footprint from the construction is from the use of tractors and front-end loaders for the transport and lifting of the ice blocks. We aim to have all the equipment used in the construction electrified by 2030 in line with our carbon neutral undertaking.
Security
Safety is a core focus in everything undertaken at Sorrisniva.
All employees and contractors are trained in the safety factors related to their role and responsibilities. All experiences and activities undertaken by Sorrisniva are thoroughly risk assessed and undertaken with the safety of their guests as the absolute priority. All experiences, including snow scooter safaris and river boat safaris, are led by specialist guides who are experts in the safe operation of them. All guests are provided with the safety equipment and clothing appropriate to the climate and experience being undertaken.
