Welcome to Fjærland Fjordstove! : DSC_8675

The owners of the hotel, Bård and Inna, welcome you and will make sure you have an unforgettable stay at their small but very cozy and authentic hotel. In their 15-room hotel they tend to have around 30 different nationalities per month. On the other hand, thanks to its small size and capacity, it’s not flooded by hoards of mass-tourists.

The hotel features 15 incredible rooms that each possess their own unique identity and offer stunning views of the neighboring countryside. As a guests you will have a front-row seat to the dramatic Sognefjord that looms over the hotel.

Fjærland: Fjærland

Set on the spectacular Sognefjord, Fjærland is both beautiful and lively with plenty of things to do. It has mountains, valleys, forests, farms, and above all, it is where the glacier meets the fjord. That has all kinds of lovely effects, like the view from the hotel, the glacier-minerals-sparkling-green color of the water in summer, the access to glacier walks, kayaking, swimming, fishing, and much more

The book town: BOKBYEN FJARLAND FOTO VEGARD AASEN

Fjærland is a Book Town, with books stored in cute little places, like shelves, abandoned buildings, etc. Every summer a festival called “Book night” takes place here

The glaciers: BOYABREEN

Fjærland is the place where the Sognefjord meets Jostedalsbreen Glacier with its white and blue arms hanging down steep mountains. Some tourists have named it the most beautiful glacier village in the world and we could not agree more. In Fjærland, you can get very close to two of these outlet glaciers – Bøyabreen and Supphellebreen.

Glacier walks: NIGARDSBREEN LUSTER 5 SOGNEFJORD FOTO HAVARD NESBO

In Fjærland you can walk to Supphellebreen, 1000 metres above sea level. This is a demanding hike for 2-4 hours, before you can enter the glacier. Here, you will experience a beautiful view towards Fjærland and the Fjælandsfjord. Easier glacier walks you can find, for instance, on Haugabreen (in Jølster) or Nigardsbreen (in Jostedalen).

Visit The Norwegian Glacier Museum: IMG_9731 (1)

You don’t need to walk the glacier to experience it. In walking distance from the hotel you will find this interactive museum which gives you knowledge about glaciers and climate in a new and exciting way. The Glacier Museum shows the interaction in nature and between nature and man – through advanced film technology, interactive models and your own experiments with real glacier ice.

Kayak in the fjord: KAJAKK FJARLAND FOTO HAVARD NESBO1

Another way to see the glacier and to experience the beautiful fjord is by kayak. You can rent a kayak at the hotel and paddle right to see the two arms of the glacier or left to get closer to the delta. If you’re lucky, you will meet the local eagle, otters, black dolphins (porpoises), and even a seal (late summer) or killer whales (early spring). Guided tours are available.

Relax in the sauna: DSC_9225

“Dampen” is the floating sauna at the cool Fjærland Fjord. Relax in the steaming hot sauna while enjoying the nature outside, with views of mountains and glaciers.

Enjoy delicious local produce food and drinks: DSC_8589

The hotel has a high focus on food, and their restaurant is open to both guests and outside. Staying true to the essence of Nordic Cuisine, they do their best to make the most of what they have, which is access to an incredible variety of local produce. From the local fish, deer, beef, lamb, honey, potatoes, dairy and our own herb garden, along with seasonal produce that we get from further afield, they aim to create delicate, simple and wholesome food. All to be enjoy with their selection of French wines, locally crafted beer, and ciders.

This product meets our requirements for Ecorating, a product that is good for humans and the environment.

From 2020 to 2022, the hotel had a project with funding from Innovation Norway with specific measures to improve the environmental footprint of the hotel. They are actively working to reduce energy consumption, produce less waste, recycle and reuse, and reduce water usage and pollution.

  • The hotel is certified Eco-Lighthouse (Miljøfyrtårn) since 2015, and committed to continuously seek out better environmental solutions and have environmental protection as a natural part of their corporate culture.

  • As far as possible, they will only serve short-distance vegetables that are grown according to the principles in “Market Gardening” from their local supplier Bøtun gard.

  • As far as possible, the food is produced locally; free-range pig, cattle, lamb, eggs, wild deer (hotel owner is hunting)

  • 30–60% of fish and other seafood is fished by their employees locally

  • Their garden is an “edimental” garden, which means that even the ornamental plants are edible and used in the restaurant. They aim to eventually also convert all house plants to have edible properties.

  • As much as possible of food and drink should be organic

  • To send as much of their waste to recycling as possible.

  • The hotel has started testing solar panels for own electricity generation.

  • They have invested in heat pumps to make more heat from less electric energy (1 kWh in gives 5,7 kWh heating).

  • They will invest in more insulation.

  • Reuse of furniture, interior and panel, where they can buy used:

    • Fjærland Fjordstove Hotell bought the hotel interior of 13 rooms from Hotel Continental in Oslo in 2012.

    • Panel in restaurant is from a barn from Vang in Valdres.

Environmental promotions

  • The hotel gives 10% discount on hotel rooms on arrival at the hotel with documented use of public transport.

  • They give 5% discount on hotel rooms on arrival at the hotel by electric car.

  • They give 5% discount on hotel rooms for businesses that are eco certified when arranging business meetings.

  • They give 10% discount on hotel rooms after the third night.

Local food and edimental garden

The combination of the produce of the Western Norwegian fjords with international cuisine is a marriage thinking globally, while acting locally. The hotel works closely with their local suppliers, farms in walking distance from the hotel, and takes pleasure in everything that they can offer from Fjord Norway’s own pantry: fish and seafood, venison, lamb, cheese, berries, vegetables, herbs, and even wild plants that they collect.

Their garden is both edible and ornamental:

  • All plants in the garden have edible qualities. The garden is designed to be both edible and ornamental = edimental.

  • Borrow scissors in the reception, and make tea with leaves or flowers that you harvested yourself.

  • Do not eat anything you are not certain of. They have a deadly poisonous weed (digitalis).

  • Their plants are perennials: they need less maintenance and they keep CO2 in the soil.

Care for others

At Fjærland Fjordstove Hotell, they give all tips to Care4 Starving Children in Uganda. In 2022, Bård Huseby, the hotel owner, helped create awareness around the project by cycling large parts of the way from Norway to Kampala in Uganda and all the way up again.
