Sample Itinerary
The villa is only available for exclusive use. This makes this villa a piece of paradise just for you after a day of adventure and exploration, and the staff go out of their way to make you feel safe, welcome and at home.
The villa was built in 2017 by Dee Gibson, a British-Sri Lankan female designer who has a passion for design and travel and their cumulative effect on our emotional well-being. Every thought was given to luxurious accommodation seamlessly blended with modern conveniences so you can enjoy every moment of your stay.
The villa consists of 4 double bedrooms, all with en-suite bathrooms, comes with handmade four-poster beds made by local craftsmen as standard. Designed for deep, dreamy sleep, rooms feature hand-carved shutters that open onto our jungle garden, along with beautiful wildlife. Waking up to the sound of the morning choir or watching the monkeys swing through the trees from the top floor balconies connects you with nature in a very spiritual way.
Expect hot massage showers and comfortable mattresses with the softest pillows, dressed in great linens. Air conditioning is in all rooms for extra hot days, but many guests love the skin-cooling breeze flowing from the ceiling fans instead.
Soft towels and organic toiletries are in the rooms for use during your stay.
Enjoy lazy days by the pool
The local Turtle Beach is just 100 meters away and a seasonal beach bar attracts a few surfers and paddle boarders from nearby villas and boutique hotels. There is nothing more relaxing than watching the sunset from this spot and hearing the sound of the ocean waves as the light turns golden and the sun drops from the horizon. You may see one or two of the villagers fishing, and an early morning trip to the bay will reward you with the sight of fishermen coming in with the day’s catch. Take a nice morning walk before breakfast in the house.
There is a lot to do nearby, and we are happy to put together a program for you. Some popular activities are visits to a turtle sanctuary, safari, sunset cruise on a private catamaran, cooking class with the house’s own chef, trip to tea plantations, bike rides through rice fields, train ride to Galle, to name a few…
Galle is a beautiful Dutch UNESCO World Heritage Site – lots of cobbled streets and shops to meander in. The trip takes about 40 minutes in a tuk-tuk and there are plenty of places to have lunch.
The area has some of Sri Lanka’s best beaches for surfing, and there are options for both beginners and experienced surfers.
Yoga in beautiful surroundings! There is a magic in the garden that everyone feels. It is soothing, healing and with a deep energy that is hard to describe. Must be experienced!
You won’t go hungry here! The house’s own chef prepares the most delicious, local and authentic dishes. You can decide whether you want full or half board – you decide! If you want to learn how to cook some of the dishes you have been served, you can join the chef to the market and shop for fresh ingredients and then come home to his family and get an introduction to local cooking. A favorite!

A stay at Kalukanda House excites guests who want to travel and embrace new cultures, explore through adventure and see the world in a way beyond what is prescribed by typical guidebooks. At Kalukanda, they are also very concerned about how they run their business. Their approach to sustainability takes into account the entire ecosystem around Kalukanda House – and people are an integral part of it. Guests, employees, the local communities and how the business operates in an ethical and mutually beneficial way are dear to their hearts.
Kalukanda is proud to support Their Future Today, a local charity for abandoned women and girls. They are also part of The Good Market Global community which supports ethical businesses.
Sustainability:
Built ethically by local craftsmen using reclaimed materials, Kalukanda House works with local businesses to bring the villa to life.
Hot water is heated via solar panels and the landscaped gardens are planted to absorb natural rainfall. The chef always uses fresh, seasonal and local ingredients, and we continuously strive to become 100% dependent on food sourced from the local area. Their reliable tuk-tuk drivers are from the village and are self-employed. Proud to be part of the team, their loyal and long-standing relationship that means they will come out to guests at all hours of the day, at short notice. Experiences can be arranged through their Sri Lankan network – surf lessons, cooking classes, tea plantation tours, massages – you name it. Kulakanda has tried and tested every activity recommended to guests. Industry partners are operators with the same value and whom they have personally met and chosen. Whether business owners themselves or key managers, everyone who works with us, from all over the world, has a deep understanding of what we do. Our ecosystem is built on human contacts and mutual respect and understanding.
Give back: Kalukanda House is heavily involved in the organization Their Future Today, and $50 pp from every stay in the Villa is donated to the organization. Their mission is to end the institutionalization and suffering of vulnerable children disadvantaged by poverty in Sri Lanka. TFT’s long-term vision is to see poverty reduced, communities strengthened and lives transformed to end institutionalization and introduce a foster care system so that every child can regain their human right to grow up in a family. As a guest at Kalukanda House, it is possible to visit the nursery which is financed and run by the organisation.
