Sustainability is in the DNA of Six Senses hotels, you don’t do it lightly or easily here. In addition to running the resort in the most sustainable way possible, they also get involved in various projects and many of these relate to the sea and underwater life here. Below we mention some of the projects but not all;

Manta rays are one of the species that live here and which you can also see all year round. The Manta Trust is a registered charity with a mission to conserve Manta rays and their habitats through research, education and collaboration. Since 2014, Six Senses has worked with the Manta Trust to study the local population and educate guests and the local community about the importance and vulnerability of mantas. Innovative research techniques enable the team to learn more about mating behavior and pregnancy.

Sea turtles are another species that is protected here via the Olive Ridley project, as are dolphins.

To protect this fragile underwater environment, Six Senses works with local fishermen to ensure that all seafood served is sustainably fished. It has also been decided to protect 5 marine areas on Laamu Atoll.

An excerpt of the projects on land:

Managing waste is one of the biggest challenges in the Maldives, which is why they try to create as little waste as possible at the resort. The waste that is still produced is sorted on site, single-use plastic is prohibited and the resort actively encourages all its suppliers to reduce packaging material.

It runs Eku Eky community education – translated as “together”, which focuses on educating local people in sustainability and conservation of the environment.

50% of the water sales at the restaurants at the resort go to a project that is about providing clean and sustainable drinking water to the local community. The project has also generated money for a reverse osmosis plant that supplies hospitals, 30 households with water filters as well as larger water filters for 23 schools and preschools in the atoll as well as for 5 police stations and the Maldives National University.
