Livingstone was fascinated by this magical place, and he called Lake Malawi the “lake of stars”. And he was absolutely right: this is indeed a special place, an area that enchants with its rhythm. Here you feel the energy of nature in one of the most beautiful and remote areas in Africa. Likoma Island is located out in Lake Malawi, and here you will probably find the lake’s best diving areas – here are many fish, and not least many different kinds of fish!

Sample Itinerary
Explore the surroundings by canoe or by taking a guided tour of the area. The wide beach is completely safe to swim from (although the sand is not the softest) and you can borrow water skis or a rowing boat if you want to go out on the water. If you want to dive, there is a PADI center right next door. Slightly older children can borrow a mountain bike and if they want to go past the local primary school to play a game of football with the students. It will be a battle they will never forget: in the middle of the field stands a large baobab tree! Feel free to also take part in guided quad bike rides on the island, where you will see the fine old St. Peter’s Church and the market in Mbamba, a cozy and very lively little town.

All rooms at Kaya Mawa (the name means “maybe tomorrow” by the way) are different but with good beds, white mosquito nets, chests from Zanzibar and elegant pillows and duvet covers from Suzie’s Katundus textile workshop.

Kaya Mawa takes ecotourism seriously . That’s why the two British environmentalists Mavericks Andrew Came and William Sutton have made the hotel self-sufficient with, among other things, a wind turbine that pumps water to the hotel and solar panels to provide electricity to the computer, refrigerator and satellite phone.
The hotel will be an integral part of the local community, and is and has been involved in various projects such as getting water drawn to nearby villages.
Katundu Textile was founded by Suzie Lightfoot and it is from this local workshop that all the fabric for furniture and many other things in the hotel come from. The production provides jobs locally, and also means that (primarily) women receive a basic education in various techniques.
