Local community:
Majlis works with the local community to protect nature and the environment, and to improve the quality of life locally. The goal is to build a brighter future for the local population, the environment and the area’s wildlife.

Majlis is involved in several projects in Kenya, here are some of them:

Active contributor and sponsor of Wamba Athena Onlus (WAO), an international association operating in sanitary and social programs. In Kenya, WAO founded the Catholic Hospital Wamba (CHW) in 1969. The hospital is located 400 km northeast of Nairobi. The hospital offers life-saving services and assistance to the local population (approximately 200,000 people). In addition to the hospital business, CHW also runs a school for nurses, and you can also complete a high school education here.http://www.wambahospital.org/

Active contributor and sponsor of ANIDAN, a so-called NGO with a focus on children’s needs and future in Kenya. On the island of Lamu off the northern coast of Kenya, ANIDAN operates a Shelter, where hundreds of children live, receive basic education, food in their stomachs and clothes on their bodies. ANIDAN makes sure that the children do not end up on the streets, but have an opportunity for a better future.https://www.anidan.ong/

Workforce: More than 95% of the staff at Majlis are Kenyans – that is, about 75 people. The focus is on hiring local talent to support the local community in this way, as most employees have between 2 and 4 children – this ultimately means that many hundreds of people are helped to maintain a sensible life. It also supports the local football team in Shela “Bright Stars” and also provides financial support to the local kindergartens and orphanages.

Child Conditions and Sexual Assault: Majlis has a policy on the sexual exploitation of children and young people – something that unfortunately exists in Kenya and other African countries. Majlis condemns and works actively against this, both from a moral but not least from a human perspective: all children and young people have the right to a good childhood and upbringing. You follow all laws in the area, and also prevent by, for example, making sure that there are no sites on the site that can be used for the purchase of sexual services in secret.

Environment: Majlis is located on Manda Island (Lamu Archipelago) and has no electricity supply from the mainland. One is therefore dependent on generators to be able to produce electricity. But a decision has been made to go in a more green direction, initially for green electricity to make up 70% of the site’s supply and later when it is practically possible 100%. Investments have been made in a 40 KW hybrid photovoltaic system to begin with.

In addition to the photovoltaic system, you work with energy-saving projects, such as replacing all light bulbs with low-energy variants, you turn off lights or machines that are not really needed (such as a TV being turned on in a room where no one is watching)

Other environmentally friendly incentives: Carefully assess which cleaning agents and other chemicals are used. Natural, ecological methods are also used to control mosquitoes and sand flies on the spot, which can otherwise be an itchy acquaintance. On the island, the Neem tree (originally from India) grows and by taking leaves from this tree, boiling them and spraying the mixture of leaves and water into the field, the places where insects usually lay their eggs, you can reduce the population by up to 90 % annually on site.

Majlis is 100% built with and from local materials. Stones from the local Timboni quarries (2 kilometers from the hotel) have been used and all doors, windows and furniture come from local craftsmen and carpenters.

You also shop locally and use local labor:

  • All fresh ingredients such as fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, rice, bread and water come exclusively from Kenya.
  • You always shop locally , as far as possible
  • Staff are trained to eliminate food waste, to recycle and recycle food
  • The focus is on environmentally friendly transport. There are no cars or motorcycles on Lamu, and all transports to the island take place per. boat. All boat engines have been switched from 2-stroke to 4-stroke engines, as they are more energy efficient and also less noisy.
  • Water is in short supply on Manda Island, and the water you shower in is used to water the place gardens and trees. The staff is trained in using the water efficiently, and if it is possible to use salt water for a task, then you do it. The pools also use salt water.
  • All hot water comes from a solar heating system.
