Good to know about Loita Hills: This is a large wooded area east of the Masai Mara in Kenya. The area is under the auspices of the IUCN (The International Union for Conservation of Nature) and is known for its stunning nature and botanical diversity. “The Hills” is located 2,000 meters above sea level, and the bottom of Riftdalen approximately 1,000 meters further down.

Good to remember: In Loita Hills, water is in short supply, so drink and use it with care and respect. The Masai are a proud people, always ask before you photograph. Bring notes in smaller denominations to be able to buy local crafts and the like in the small communities. How to greet the people you meet? In the same way that we in the Western world do – you take hands.

Mobile coverage and internet: No internet. Mobile coverage in periods.

Time zone: GMT + 3

Vaccinations: Read more about which vaccinations online

Packing: On safaris in Loita Hills, we are in periods over 1,500 meters above sea level, and both about in the morning, in the evening and at night it can be quite cold. Bring a good sweater and windbreaker and good shoes to walk in.

Bring a small backpack to be able to bring water, binoculars, camera or other personal belongings on the excursions. We recommend soft rather than hard travel bags – they are easier to transport along the way, so a backpack or similar is a good choice. Mosquito nets are available on site, but feel free to bring mosquito spray or similar.

Local currency: Kenyan Shilling

Observer: Kenya has banned plastic bags and this is checked by customs. If you bring a plastic bag, this can mean a fine.

Weather right now: Weather Masai Mara

Security: The Masai Mara is an extremely safe area. In the capital Nairobi, however, do not go alone in some places – this is especially true in the city center.

How does my trip contribute: 95% of those who work with and at the camps come from the local area. The head of the company is, for example, a Samburu Maasai (the samburu trunk is a branch of the Masaai family tree). The whole company works environmentally conscious, and here, for example, there is no electricity=minimal CO2 emissions. Hot water comes from a system of solar panels.

The campers: We have been working in this way for over 10 years, so therefore we have a huge experience of quickly and elegantly setting up simple with comfortable camps in the most inaccessible places in the area.

The camping team sets up the camp, removes grass and clears the site before you as a guest arrive at the site. A fence is made so that our good friends can pack the sleeping bags safely at night, a campfire is made and dinner is prepared in the simple but well-functioning transportable kitchen. Upon departure from the site, the site will be cleaned up and re-established.

Guides: All guides are from the Loita Hills area. As a guest you get close to your guide and get not only an insight into the culture but also lots of knowledge about the flowers, shrubs, trees, insects and birds that live here. You will learn to see signs in nature, such as where a herd of elephants has just passed by. There are a minimum of three guides in each group, and more if the group size requires it. The group always has a radio / walkie-talkie with them if contact is needed for the main camp.
