Entumoto means meeting place in Maa (the Masai language) and the lodge is perched high on top a ridge in the Great Rift Valley, with stunning views and spectacular sunsets over the Masai Mara savannah. In addition to the great location and offering a more intimate and exclusive safari experience, you also have access to the Masai Mara Nature Reserve. The majority of the staff come from the local community, giving the camp an authentic and relaxed atmosphere. Worth mentioning is that the lodge has a longterm sustainable tourism focus – for example, all electricity comes from solar panels.

Good to know about Kenya & Masai Mara: This is a large nature reserve in southwestern Kenya, and actually a continuation of the famous Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. The area got its name from the people who live in the area (Masai) and what they have for generations called the area: “Mara”, which in Masai language means “spotted”. A good description of a landscape where trees, shrubs, savannah and shadows from clouds form a “spotted” image.
Good to remember: In the Masai Mara, water is in short supply, so drink and use it with care and respect. The Masai are a proud people, always ask before you photograph. At Entumoto camp, you work consciously and the camp is run in a sustainable way. All electricity comes from solar panels and the camp also has their own system for filtering and purifying water. The camp has a herb garden to be able to grow the camp’s own vegetables – this also means that the number of transports decreases. When you choose Entomoto, you contribute to a variety of projects – here are some of them:
The Rescue Center: Masai girls have to contend with a number of challenges in life. It could be about forced marriages or marriage to a man who may be too old for the girl. The more serious cases may be about female circumcision or rape. The Rescue Center is located by the Siana Boarding School, and here we try to help the young girls, both acutely and in preventive projects. You are welcome to visit the center, and since you only finance the company through donations, your contribution is a huge help if you want to support the work.
You can also become a “sponsor” for one of the girls, and in that way help her get an education and in the long run a probably much better life. Right now, work is underway to improve the kitchen and dining room at the school.
Conservation of land project: The Mara-Serengeti system houses a total of about 40% of Africa’s wildlife. Over the last 50 years, Africa has lost close to perhaps half of its wildlife, counted in the large mammals, and to stop this alarming development, we must learn how we humans can live with the large animals, without taking all their habitats from them. Most of the Mara-Serengeti system is privately owned and is located outside the reserves. Happily enough, it has been possible to double the number of square kilometers of reserves in these areas since 2004. The Entumoto camp has been a driving force in this work, among other things by setting up the Siana Conservancy. The purpose is to convince local landowners not to convert the land to agriculture or to keep cattle on, but instead, lease the land to the Siana Conservancy and thus get a fixed, annual compensation. The landowners can now survive on their land, while the increasing amount of tourists contributes to the economic development of the local community.
This is one way in which Entumoto seeks to create alternative sources of revenue for the local community. There are currently agreements with over 3,000 landowners in the area. They also primarily employ young Masai, give them training and education and in the long run an opportunity to be able to live off their land without destroying it.
Siana Secondary School for Girls: Siana Boarding School opened a new department in 2017 – a high school for girls. This is really a great progress and some new opportunities for many of these girls, where many would otherwise get married at an early age, and spend most of their life being a mother and wife. Now some completely new paths are opening up.
Entumoto has been working on this project for a long time, and now the school has, among other things, a large hall, which serves as a gathering place and where the girls have the opportunity to study. Other parts of the school include a kitchen and a dining room where one can learn practical things like housekeeping and cooking.
